Bringing music, laughs, and fundraising for a local resident, award-winning musical comedian Kenny Shaw will perform June 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Port Alice Golf Club.
“This town needs a little pick-me-up,” said Club President Tom McCarthy said of Port Alice, which has been struggling for the past two years with unemployment and dwindling population since the Neucel Cellulose mill curtailment in March 2015. “Kenny is one of the funniest people I’ve ever seen. He is laugh-out-loud funny. And a hell of a musician too!”
Shaw’s web site, kennyshaw.ca, says he draws his audiences into “a wacky world of high-powered comedy and music, innovative skits, and hilarious one-liners. His performances are liberally laced with crafty impressions, hysterical comedy and incredible musical tributes to his client’s favorite entertainers. He integrates the hits of contemporary musical artists from the past three decades with humorous sketches of Dr. Ruth, Red Green, Jack Nicholson, Christopher Lloyd and many more.”
McCarthy and Shaw are also using the opportunity to do some fundraising for the golf club’s bartender and lifelong Port Alice resident Gail Bartrim. Minus Shaw’s fuel and travel expenses, admission sales will be donated to Bartrim who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer.
He remembers being hired by Bartrim in the 1980s.
“Gail and I became friends after that,” he said. “Gail is one of those people who really deserves support. She’s community minded. I’ll be there for her. With her personality and constitution, maybe she can beat this thing. I wish all the best for her.”
Courtney resident Shaw says he has performed about 20 times in Port Alice over his 37-year career.
“Port Alice is a pristine little town, very well taken care of,” said Shaw. “And the people there have a warmth and closeness.”
Across North America, Shaw has played on the main stage with country stars Brooks and Dunn, Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, and Deanna Carter among others. He has won the British Columbia Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year Award four times, and was inducted into the BCCMA Hall of Fame in 2011. He has also opened the Canadian Country Music Association Awards Show in Vancouver, Ottawa, Edmonton, and Hamilton.
While Shaw is often known for his adult-themed performances, he tailors his show for the audience, and also does children’s shows and music festivals.
Tickets for the Port Alice event are pre-sale only, available at the Port Alice Scotiabank or at the Port Alice Golf Club for $10 per person. A designated driver will be available.
